Crafting A Perfect Holiday

The horrible time of year has arrived, where everyone feels like they have to participate in crazy amounts of cheer and merriment to feel a part of the season. Christmas movies are shown with beer tastings. Santa Claus drops by malls and a few choice brunch locations. The classic Nutcracker ballet goes on repeat for the month. But all of those activities aren’t really working for you, are they? Even worse, you have no swag in return for your holiday fervor. Fear not, (614) has the perfect handmade solution for you this holiday season.

In Columbus, there are unique crafts you can make for the holidays, and a surprising number of them let you have a drink while working on them. It is a good way to prepare for the season of giving (you know, by building up your alcohol tolerance), and you can even learn a skill while you drink. So channel your inner elf and shower people with sincerity when they open your it’s-the-thought-that-counts homemade gifts.

Board and Brush

Buried in the heart of downtown Powell, Board And Brush is a great option if you would like to learn how to make one of those great, Pinterest-looking wooden signs for your very own. They have a whole sign style gallery for you to choose from, and then they have a bunch of talented people who can direct you to custom make your sign and also become DIY wonderful. Better yet, you are allowed to enjoy a glass of wine with anyone else you decide to bring along while you create your masterpiece.

AR Workshop

Found in downtown Worthington, this cute and cozy workshop truly has it all. You can learn how to be Ron Swanson, you don’t have to buy any materials, and you can make some quality items: a lazy susan, a jewelry board, a photo frame, a variety of signs—for that special someone this holiday. They even have an open door policy for bringing your own beer. Even better, your sixth visit is free.

Color Me Mine

You can come anytime during open hours to this walk-in studio in Dublin, Ohio. Simply pick out your ceramic piece at the shop, paint it, and they will fire it for you. This is a very cool art project place with a variety of projects to choose from, including trees you can pick that come with a lighting kit and a star. You can make your own snow globe, and of course, you can make your ornaments here as well, making you the envy of all when you bring out the holiday decorations next year. Bring your own drinks, adult or otherwise, and dig in!

The Smithery

Learn metal stamping, the art of making your own jewelry, and how you can create brass or copper ornaments at The Smithery. You can even make a pet tag for the special fur baby in your life. Since you’ll be working with a kiln of fire, you’ll need to leave the alcohol at home.

Planthropy

These classes pop up around the city of Columbus, but if you want to give a bit of green for a holiday gift, these interior landscaping lessons are the workshops for you. You have your choice of beautiful succulents, and they supply all the lovely accoutrements to make a home for your plant, bringing a little bit of nature indoors for the winter.

Studio 614

Studio 614 is another series of pop-up classes that travel around the city, offering eager elf-in-training. They give you the choice of making your own signs, constructing a wreath, creating ornaments, painting a mug, or even painting your own yoga mat. Bring your own drinks, food, and inner muse for the festivus season. Locations change all the time, but the fun remains the same.
