This Halloween, as you gear up for that friendly soiree, office shindig, or the Short North's elegant High Ball Masquerade, we suggest something outside the selection available on the big box-store rack. Aside from razors in your candy apple, there's little worse than wracking your brain for the perfect Halloween costume, only to show up at a party and discover your doppelganger already sucking up the spot light.

Chicken, designed and modeled by Eve Warnock

Eve Warnock, a veritable jack-of-all-trades, hasn't such a worry. Nor does she need to wait for Halloween to don a costume. A gifted designer, performer, filmmaker, and artist, Warnock is one of the three talented co-founders of performance collective, Queen Mae and the Bells. "I create costumes to perform," writes Warnock. "They are customized to the wearer, making movement a large factor in the outcome of the design." But the costumes aren't just for the stage. When I asked Eve if she did commission pieces, say, for a costume-impaired journalist, she gave an emphatic yes.
But it does take some groundwork. Her costumes are pieces of art with a strong conceptual foundation. Getting to know her client and learning his or her physical traits and personality are an important part of the design itself. It makes sense, as each piece in Eve's vast portfolio is imbued with its own enigmatic story.
"The costumes hold magic," she said seriously. I believed her.
