Hop Hits

Beats
Drumline was a lousy movie, but that doesn't mean that the real thing isn't wicked cool - especially in the early evening during Gallery Hop. The Saints Drumline (www.saintsdrumline.org) is made up of local students ranging in age from 6 to 18 who pound out a number of surprisingly complex riffs. Just try not to stand in the middle of the street. People don't like that.
Freaks
It's not uncommon to see organized events like the Zombie Walk culminate at the Hop, but not all the weirdoes you see on a Hop night are attached to a cause. Some things, like "THAT CAR," you come to expect. Others, like a looming devil on stilts, can take you by surprise. You never know what you're going to get, which is why you have to be there.
Greeks
Zeta's European Emporium (751 N High St.) is loaded with an assortment of authentic goodies you can't find anywhere else, from fine imported olive oils to fantastic feta cheeses, exotic soaps and snacks - all at great prices. They also feature a unique selection of wines, a number of which are available for sampling during the Hop.
Geeks
Remember all those magazines you kept in the closet? You promised to do something really cool with them, but then a pipe popped and you had to heave that moldy stack of soggy paper to the trash. Bruce Abbott of Abbott's Antique Paper & Emporium (1108 N High St.) managed to do what you could only talk about. It takes a while, but eventually those cheesy ads do develop an artistic quality - you are holding on to your copies of 614, right?
