The Arnold Sports Festival, held March 4th - 7th, is the largest multi-sport event in the country, and brings together around 17,000 athletes and 170,000 spectators each year to witness and participate in 40 events.
While these events are primarily focused on health and fitness, there is one event that stands out in particular, not because of its hulking contestants or its feats of strength, but because of its focus on art. Art at the Arnold is a drawing and painting competition, held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, that allows contestants access to the unique subject matter at hand, in a move not simply to strengthen the body, but the perceptions of those who are handy with a pencil or a brush.
On Friday, March 5th, competitors will draw live athletic models at the event, and later on that afternoon, will venture forth into the festivities with digital cameras to collect images for the next day's drawing. Saturday will be an all-day work session for pieces that will be submitted on Sunday for the competition. The finished, framed artwork will be judged by Julie Taggert, Dean of Fine Arts at CCAD. Winners will receive a cash prize.
Art at The Arnold will be held at The Connector of The Greater Columbus Convention Center (400 N High St.) on March 5th through March 7th. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit .
