Cbusr. One made-up word with a very real mission of bringing people together has become a flourishing part of Columbus’ social media culture, uniting and highlighting the capital city’s young professionals.

The concept started when former New Yorker Matthew Martindale moved to Columbus, eager to test a new market for business. Martindale had been coasting on the social scene and when he transitioned from the Big Apple to the Buckeye State, he quickly realized one thing – he needed more friends. He set out to make connections with those who shared similar career paths.

It made perfect sense for Martindale to start a business involving people because human interaction is his passion. “I love being around people,” he said. “I figured out that I wanted to help them actively engage in face-to-face communication rather than Facebook or Twitter where it tends to keep you on-site.”

Martindale’s Cbusr group holds “meet-ups” once a month at different locations throughout the city, allowing its denizens to connect and interact.

“It’s a great way for people to learn from each other and build positive, strong, lasting relationships,” he said.

As the face of the company, Martindale’s versatile style is always on display. This month, (614) turns the tables on the man who’s typically asking all the questions.

What’s your typical everyday style?

I have phases and I love fashion. So, I’m kind of all over the place. I love suits and dressing up, but I have an alterative side as well. I’ll throw on a t-shirt with a pair of jeans and Chuck Taylors and be satisfied.

What advice do you offer someone who is trying to pursue his or her dream career?

Absolute discipline. If you control your thoughts, your actions, your emotions – no person or circumstance can stop you. Discipline attracts achievement.

What’s your favorite TV show?

I would have to say The Office.

What’s your favorite summer accessory?

Aviator sunglasses.

Where would you choose to live if you could reside anywhere in the world?

New York. It forever has a piece of my heart.

What keeps you motivated?

When we have the Cbusr meet-ups and I see all of those people help support and build the community, it really excites me. The community and my business partners also encourage me to succeed.

What three things could you not live without?

Laptop, music and people.

Martindale is wearing Zoo York Huber Skate Shoes, Express Loyalty Washed Graphic Tee, Express Slim Fit Straight Leg Rocco Jeans and a Beverly Hills Polo Club watch.
