Power Suit: Katie Pierce
By Erica ZurmehlyPublished July 1, 2012
Katie Pierce doesn’t just march to the beat of her own drum – she creates her own soundtrack.
Part of the creative team at CAPA by day, Pierce keeps it strictly rock-and-roll during the evening hours. She recently joined a local band called June66, but, most notably, it’s her music blog Jack In The Pocket that brings out her inner rock star. The blog gives exclusive interviews with some of today’s best indie musicians, with 35-plus interviews under her belt with acts like Neon Indian, Bear In Heaven and Here We Go Magic.
This small-town girl grew up just outside of Cleveland and graduated from The Ohio State University, which was where the needle hit the groove on her love affair with indie music.
“I’ve always been really into music, and I began listening to CD101 a lot and it evolved from there,” she said. “Music is so interesting because it’s so deeply intertwined with how people define themselves.”
Pierce immersed herself heavily in the local music landscape – absorbing local talent, while still keeping an eye to the region, traveling to surrounding cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland to watch and interview bands.
“My first band I ever interviewed was Phantogram and I had enough courage to just walk up and talk to them,” she said. “Some of the things they would say were just so interesting to me that I was hooked.”
Pierce writes a lot about raw, local talent coming to Columbus. Some of her favorite music venues include Skully’s and The Newport.
“Those stages have seen a lot of rock ‘n’roll. We have so many great musicians coming through here. I like sharing the experiences I have with these bands with other people who have the same music interests.”
Who is your alter ego?
Alison Mosshart from The Kills.
What is the best concert you’ve been to?
White Denim was amazing. I saw them at the Basement a few months ago and I was glowing for, like, three days after. They’re so incredibly talented. And, of course, I always love seeing The Kills.
If you could play any instrument what would it be?
I have a violin that I play, but I would also love to learn the piano.
Who would you describe your style as being most like?
A mix between Mosshart and Liela Moss from Duke Spirit.
Best hidden gem of Columbus?
Eclectiques Antique Mall in Clintonville is an amazing treasure trove of vintage clothes, furniture, and records at reasonable prices.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Columbus?
Aside from going to shows, I enjoy going to local restaurants. My boyfriend and I recently went to brunch at Spagio for the first time and loved it. The smoked salmon brioche is to die for.
