Classic Pursuit

OSU grad pioneers local pop-up suit shop

If you’ve ever stepped into a men’s department store and felt overwhelmed at the suit selection, Pursuit CEO Nate DeMars is here for you.

Pursuit is narrowing down the search for the perfect business suit by sorting through the clutter and stocking only the styles that make sense for a younger demographic. The men’s suit store, which enlists a pop-up shop business model, will be stationed at the South Campus Gateway through the winter quarter before taking the concept on the road.

Although DeMars always knew he wanted to have his own business, the idea first sparked while sitting in a classroom at OSU. “My focus in graduate school was real estate and I was instantly intrigued by the idea of pop-up retail,” he explained.

In the months following, DeMars found himself in the market for a suit and suddenly started to take notice of the styles sported by his peers around campus.

“Every guy seemed to be wearing a variation of the same look and a lot of guys were wearing ill-fitting suits, at that,” he noted.

Frustrated by department stores with plenty of options to appeal to “everyone and anyone,” DeMars decided to dig deeper to find out if other men were at odds with the same, non-tailored experience. Through his research, DeMars quickly learned that most men were also shopping at these same department stores, which offered little to no focus on options to outfit a younger crowd. A poll also suggested that most young men were shopping for suits at the same places as their fathers, a rarity in any other category of dress.

DeMars quickly realized the niche market before him; just about every guy on campus needs to wear a suit at some point, whether it be for an interview, a formal or presentation. Although the concept was originally geared toward college students, the Pursuit team quickly learned that their concept also appealed members of a slightly older demographic who love to buy local or just plain hate the shopping mall experience.

While Pursuit will maintain some permanent presence in Columbus, the company will soon take the show on the road throughout the Midwest and eventually across the nation. The mobile showroom and pop-up shops will target college towns like Athens and Oxford, where there are few shopping options.

Pursuit’s plan is to take the guesswork out of dressing by stocking an inventory of classic suits that promise a modern fit, perfect for the student or young professional. Suits range in price from $199 to $399 along with the option to purchase separates, shirts, ties and belts.

Love the concept! Looking forward to purchasing a new pur-suit when I get back in the 614!
