Maybe the last thing you want to think about during the winter months is how the extreme cold affects nature. That’s too bad, because the ice and snow we try to avoid consistently warps our perception. Prudence Gill and Terry Lindquist will be exhibiting works in a nice warm gallery that examine these frigid dynamics. These pieces explore the otherworldly quality of our own backyard, in some cases, as Old Man Winter forces his twisted sensibilities on things we might otherwise take for granted. The opening reception on January 10th will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.

This is simple: the Worthington Area Art League has thrown down the gauntlet to its artists to submit their work for harsh judgement. Feelings will be hurt and tears will be shed. The great thing about juried exhibits is you get to compare your artistic awareness with that of the judges. Maybe you’ll see the pieces with ribbons on them and wonder why you can’t get your hands on what the judge was smoking.
There’s a people’s choice award as well – which is often the most coveted recognition for the artists. Actually, it’s not. The most coveted recognition is probably making enough money at selling art to quit the bartending gig, but people’s choice is a close second.

This is one of those weird exploratory exhibits designed to make you think about serious things. The artist, Pierre Leichner, is also a psychiatrist who apparently has some issues with the way our society handles mental illness. Pierre has taken the various manuals dealing with mental illness and transformed them into compelling pieces that call upon us to examine the politics and economics involved in diagnosing and treating mental illness.
