A Decade of Deviance
Fetish festival Trauma celebrates 10 years

Since 2001, Columbus’ world-famous Halloween fetish party has been letting us get as close to the deviance as we dare. (Just watching is called “voyeurism,” and yes, it’s a fetish, too.)
So maybe you aren’t ready to swing 20 feet through the air while suspended by giant fishhooks in your back. Maybe your kind of kinky is licking the sour cream off your partner’s Nachos Bell Grande.
Whatever your interest, Trauma strives to cultivate a safe atmosphere for watching and experimentation. The party, thrown by the owner of Evolved Body Art, Nick Wolak, and Jacob Wooten, who co-owns KOBO with Wolak, is one of the largest of its kind. Entertainment ranges from returning local sexbots Anna and the Annadroids to DJ Moxy, Flypaper, hypnotist Bill Gladwell, Shin Tower Music, Phantods, The Town Monster, Megachurch and even Sybian “racing.” (If you don’t know what a Sybian is, imagine a riding lawnmower’s lovechild with a sex toy.)
“You’re not going to find a better Halloween show anywhere. My first one was last year, and I was blown away by the entire thing,” said Hank Straty, general manager of the Bluestone, where the event will be held. “There were so many different elements going on around the entire building, and they’re all so exciting. The place is just electric. Everyone gets to step out of their natural skins for just one night, and I think that’s what’s fetishes are all about,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s scary at all,” said Wooten. “People look at Trauma that haven’t been to it, and they go, ‘Aw man, that looks kinda weird for me,’ and they always leave it saying, ‘Wow, I’ve never experienced anything like that before.’ Ourselves included. We kind of want to be surprised every year, and see things that we’ve never seen before.”
Wooten said that, for partygoers’ peace of mind, they enforce very strict rules concerning photography, and guests can wear a wristband that prohibits any photos being taken by the authorized event photographers.
“I know of a few people that come and get those wristbands who are very right-wing, conservative people,” he said. “But everyone has that side they want to get out of them once in a while.
“I don’t personally have any whips or paddles, but a lot of people want to see it happen, or experience it at least once,” said Wooten. “And Trauma’s kind of the segue to that.”
You owe it to yourself: go see how the twisted screw.
An Annariew with Anna of the Annadroids
Anna and the Annadroids, recently mentioned in The New Yorker, is a sexy robot collective manufactured in Columbus, but a terrible and persuasive evil has taken them from us ... at least for now. Fortunately, they ARE programmed to perform at Trauma this year. Thanks to Texas Instrument’s ingenious BotPhone Scientific Calculator, (614) was able to telescam a few questions for this story:
What is Anna?
Anna is a perfect android. She was made and programmed by the Amerifluff Corporation to be a perfect spokesperson and media icon for the company’s omnipresent Plastic Pleasures products and, more subtly, for its imperiously pervasive “Plastic is Pleasure” political agenda and marketing strategies. She is the most successful advertising tool ever created. She is the most recognized “personality” on planet Earth and beyond. Every girl everywhere wants to be Anna.
What is Columbus?
Columbus is a magical place where you can live in amazing spaces and meet a lot of beautiful faces. It is a breeding ground for the creative-and business-type alike. Columbus is one of Anna’s favorite places on Earth.
What is night?
Night is when the darkness within can really come to the surface and we can deal with or hang out with our demons. The most creative time for Anna is between midnight and three in the morning.
What’s the sexiest phrase you know in binary?
