In the great book of baller wedding moves, the groom secretly learning to sing The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” and unveiling it as a surprise part of the ceremony ranks pretty high.
Of course, that’s just one of many unforgettable features of Sylvester and Cynthea (Godwin) Nadar’s Big Day, a winter wedding at Liberty Barn Church and reception at the Columbus Zoo that somehow magically included sunny skies, snowy landscapes, live zoo animals…and sparklers. It was like the Fourth of July and White Christmas all wrapped in one, plus—penguins.
Their Big Day blended a rustic winter theme with Indian culture and bright colors, and also incorporated their own Ohio State/Michigan rivalry (Cynthea represented Ohio, while Sylvester represented Michigan), with scarlet and gray and maize and blue flags handed out to guests as they arrived so they could “choose a side.” Both were cleverly tied together throughout the ceremony, with the wedding party members each wearing red or blue saris or ties to represent their loyalties.
A wedding can have a great band or a DJ, a decadent cake, or a plentiful open bar, but you’ll probably always remember that time you attended someone’s reception and were greeted by a lemur. (No word back on whether he got a plus-one).
